Steven G. Dyer was a teacher, author, and former pastor who devoted his life to proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ. With a ministry that spanned decades, Steve poured himself into serving others—through preaching, teaching, writing, and an extraordinary approach to discipleship that reached far beyond the walls of a church building.
For over 27 years, Steve faithfully served as a pastor, including his time at Newsong Church in Grove, Oklahoma. His preaching was marked by deep biblical insight, practical application, and a passion for helping people walk in a real and vibrant relationship with God. Yet his heart for ministry wasn’t confined to the pulpit alone. He also held a master’s degree in public policy from Regent University, taught at both high school and university levels, and served as a missionary in regions as diverse as Saudi Arabia and the Navajo Reservation in Utah.
What truly set Steve apart, however, was his remarkable ability to connect the truths of Scripture with the world of horsemanship. As an experienced horse trainer, Steve spent years working with horses, participating in events such as the Extreme Mustang Makeover and other equine competitions. Through this hands-on experience, he discovered profound spiritual parallels between how a trainer builds trust with a horse and how God communicates with us, His people.
This revelation became the foundation of his unique ministry, Sermon by Horse. Through a collection of short, powerful videos, Steve used real-time horse training as a visual metaphor to illustrate spiritual truths—about obedience, trust, correction, freedom, and the nature of God's love. These messages were not only creative but deeply moving, often illuminating biblical principles in ways that were simple, relatable, and unforgettable.
What made his teaching especially accessible was that you didn’t need to know anything about horses—or even like them—to understand the spiritual lessons embedded in his work. Whether viewers were seasoned equestrians or had never seen a horse up close, they could see themselves in the journey of the animal—learning to trust, to yield, to follow. Steve’s calm, compassionate approach and his rich understanding of both Scripture and human nature made these lessons impactful across all ages and backgrounds.
Steven G. Dyer passed away on May 10, 2024, in Zena, Oklahoma, but his legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched. His teachings continue to inspire believers to pursue a deeper walk with God and to see His hand at work in the everyday moments of life—even in the dust and discipline of a training pen.
To this day, through sermonbyhorse.org and his widely shared video series and podcasts, Steve’s voice still calls out—gently, clearly, and full of grace—reminding us of the Master who leads with love and truth.
